SOCIAL ISSUES IN MANAGEMENT (SIM)

2023 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

Program Chair: Michelle Westermann-Behaylo, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The SIM Division seeks proposals for the scholarly program sessions (7 and 8 August 2023) at the 83rd Academy of Management (AOM) Meeting in Boston (MA, USA). The Annual Meeting will be in-person on-site, with all sessions hosted in Boston. Paper and symposium proposals may choose to incorporate this year’s conference theme:  Putting the Worker Front and Center. Peter Bamberger, this year’s AOM Program Chair, described the theme as follows:

“…[G]lobal shifts in the geo-political, environmental, demographic, and technological landscape are introducing unprecedented levels of uncertainty into labor markets and employment relations. [T[he 2023 theme calls for our community to rebalance our attention, and pivot towards those at the very core of productive enterprise, namely the workers. Management research has paid a lot of attention to workers as “human capital”, or in other words, the object of managers’ efforts. We have paid far less attention to workers as subjects. The 2023 Annual Meeting is our opportunity to become scholars OF management, not just scholars FOR management, and as such, to rebalance – in both our research and teaching -- the perspectives of managers and of the workers they manage.&rdquo

The 2023 theme is highly relevant for the SIM community, as much of our scholarship is related to relevant questions. Submitters are encouraged to reflect on the conceptual and practical links their work offers to the program theme. We also welcome non-thematic proposals about other topics within the SIM domain, including, but not limited to, ethical decision-making, moral development, corporate social responsibility, social performance, stakeholder engagement and relations, sustainable development, environmental management, base-of-the-pyramid, social entrepreneurship, business and human rights, public policy, governance, and corporate political strategy.

The SIM Division also sponsors numerous awards, including best paper, best student paper, best ethics paper, best dissertation, and best book. The winners of these awards are announced at the SIM business meeting.
