ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT THEORY (OMT)

2023 OMT Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

PDW Chair: Wendy Smith, University of Delaware

Do you want to help advance our profession?
If so, consider proposing an OMT PDW!

So what is a PDW anyway, and how is it different from the regular program?

Held during the Academy of Management preconference (Friday, 4 August 2023– Saturday, 5 August, 2023), a professional development workshop (PDW) seeks to …well…. help participants develop professionally.

A PDW could provide meaningful engagement with existing or new theories, build skills for research/theorizing, teaching and service, foster connections and networks, enable greater inclusion among existing and potential OMT members, etc.. Professional development workshops should be innovative, engaging, and inclusive. (For more info, check out these tips from William Dougan on creating effective PDWs). PDWs can adopt a broad range of formats – including workshops, tutorials, debates, roundtable discussion, brainstorming sessions, design workshops, improv work, etc. Different from a symposium or paper presentations, a PDW should involve active learning to enable participants to walk away with new insights, skills, and connections.

Why should I submit to OMT?

OMT scholars seek to advance theories of organizing and organizations. We engage with theorizing at the intersection of micro and macro analysis, adopting a wide variety of theories applied across broad contexts. We seek PDW’s that will advance our mission and support the development of our current and potential members. (For more information on OMT’s mission statement, check our out bylaws).

Of course, another reason to submit to OMT is that…. OMT is the Place to Be!

I’m IN – what do I do to submit a PDW?

Create a proposal. Please follow the AOM submission guidelines to create your PDW proposal. In addition to the AOM guidelines, please also add a statement of the proposed takeaways:  What you would like participants to learn/develop as a result of participating?

Submit the proposal to the AOM Submission Center by Tuesday, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 at 17:00 ET (GMT-5/UTC-5)

You might get a lot of submissions… what’s the criteria for selection? Your PDW should:

  • Offer an innovative way to help OMT members and potential members professional development by advancing theories, building skills for research/theorizing, teaching and service, fostering connections and networks, enabling greater inclusion, etc.
  • Offer a creative and interactive format for engaging participants
  • Appeal to a broad range of existing and potential OMT members (across different career stages, nationalities, roles, etc.)

Questions? If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Wendy Smith.
