MANAGEMENT EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT (MED)

2023 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

Program Chair: Arran Caza, University of North Carolina

Please join your fellow management educators and researchers, at all stages of their careers, in submitting empirical and conceptual papers, provocative scholarly essays, and symposia for the 83rd Academy of Management (AOM) Meeting, which will be held in Boston, MA from Friday, 4 August to Tuesday, 8 August 2023.

MED is the education theory, practice, and policy research division of the AoM. We welcome research insights that address challenges and opportunities that educators, leaders, students, and administrators face, including research on: practices that drive learning and student engagement; technology supported learning challenges and opportunities; business school governance and accreditation; leadership development; pedagogic theory development; course and program curricula and pedagogy; assessment design; innovative technological solutions; effective teaching or learning tools; case studies and experiential learning exercises. Scholarly work relevant to undergraduate, graduate, executive, and/or non-credit management education programs are welcome.

The 2023 conference theme is "Putting the Worker Front and Center."

This theme highlights the large-scale changes taking place in how work is conducted and understood, as well as in how we research and teach organizational phenomena. MED Division members are well-positioned to contribute to the scholarly study of these changes. As the AoM division focused explicitly on the education and development of workers and managers, we are uniquely able to explore, develop, and evaluate innovative practices that seek to put the worker front and center. The conference theme emphasizes the responsibilities that management educators and researchers have to develop and support transformative educational experiences. It asks us what we can do to address the challenges of workers all over the world and how we can help with the unprecedented levels of uncertainty we are currently experiencing.

We invite you to explore questions such as:

  • How can management education help organizations -- and individuals -- effectively and sustainably leverage their people potential?
  • What role do management educators play in helping strategic planning processes ensure human resource sustainability?
  • How can research in teaching and learning illuminate the geo-political and institutional shifts transforming the experience of work? How can we prepare people to respond to these shifts?
  • How can we better understand and help learners address the growing interest in “side hustles”?
  • Does our teaching facilitate the emergence and success of entrepreneurship among marginalized workers? Could it?
  • What changes are needed for our teaching and development efforts to reflect the changing nature of work and the transforming attitudes toward it?
  • How might the current shift in workplace power dynamics transform the nature of business schools and management education?
  • What new pedagogical approaches are needed to address the challenges faced by the world’s four billion peasants?
  • How might we more effectively help our students to understand the experience of marginalized workers?

We invite you to submit your work to the MED Division to be peer-reviewed for potential inclusion in the 2023 conference program. Submissions may have theoretical, pedagogical, or practical aims, but must be grounded in scholarship appropriate to the field.

Submission Center Opens: 6 December 2022

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, 10  January 2023 at 17:00 ET (GMT-5/UTC-5). No late submissions will be accepted.Call for Reviewers Because the MED community is strongly committed to a quality program, it is our policy that when you submit a paper you also sign up as a reviewer. In addition, we especially appreciate our generous colleagues who sign up to review even when they are not submitting. We are fortunate and grateful that so many of you are gracious enough to provide our community of management education scholars developmental support in their publication journey.

Please watch for the reviewer volunteer sign up call

You may be asked to review up to two papers from our division based on the match between the reviewer keywords you provide, and the ones used by submitting authors. We thank you for your generosity in providing your time, and your commitment to the principles of collegiality and community. MED Outstanding Reviewer Awards will be given to those reviewers who provide the highest-quality (i.e., most extensive and constructive) reviews of competitive paper and symposium submissions for the division's program as part of the AoM's Annual Meeting.

MED Writers' Workshop PDW

A central aspect of the MED program is to provide feedback to help you on your publication journey. A select number of papers that are not accepted for the program will be invited to the "Writers' Workshop PDW" where journal editors, reviewers and other experienced authors will provide feedback to help authors advance their papers towards publication. The papers selected must show clear potential to be developed into published articles, and their authors must commit to commenting on others' papers in the most constructive and collegial spirit.
