ASIA ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT (AAM)

2023 Affiliate PDW Program: Call for Submissions

PDW Chair: Chinmay Pattnaik, The University of Sydney Business School

The Asia Academy of Management (AAM) invites scholars interested in relevant business and management issues, in organizations in Asia to submit innovative and thought-provoking proposals for its Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.

Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) provide a platform for scholars to share their knowledge and expertise and to foster the professional development of the participants attending the PDWs. The PDWs provide an opportunity to develop pioneering and innovative workshops that will benefit the Academy members.

The mission of the Asia Academy is to assume a global leadership position in the advancement of management theory, research and practices as well as education of relevance to Asia. It is a global organization that welcomes researchers and practitioners who are interested in management issues relevant to Asia.

The AOM2023 meeting is of great significance to us as it focuses on the theme of "Putting the Worker Front and Center" which is an important issue called for attention by many management scholars. We have the opportunity and responsibility to create a better world for the workers with our research-based knowledge. Asia-pacific region is home to the most dynamic and highly skilled workforce who have been at the forefront of transforming the region into economic powerhouse. However, the global pandemic together with the dramatic changes in social-political and economic arena, together with typical challenges such as deglobalization and reshoring, ageing population, migrant workers, skill shortages, low wage growth, remote and hybrid workplace and employee health & well-being has created unprecedented levels of uncertainty into labor markets and employment relations in the region. Mangers and businesspeople are more eager than ever to find ways to cope with these rapidly increasing pressures from both internal and external context. Our knowledge of creating best workplace and meaningful work needs to be updated given so many unknown situations. More common themes related to the business reality, say the various management issues in the new realities of the world, are being aware of, raised and discussed among business scholars and business leaders. There is a need to deepen our attention to these and the emerging issues in Asia-pacific region. More dialogues are needed among scholars and practitioners which requires us to consider out-of-box thinking and take both short- and long- term view. Considering the variety of issues faced by Asian organizations in managing their workforce, scholars studying these organization can provide substantial recommendations to organizations based in and outside the region to learn from the Asia-pacific context.

The Asia Academy of Management invites and encourages scholars to submit proposals for PDWs on the Academy of Management 2023 conference theme and the related areas. We suggest some topics which requires greater scholarly discourse below:

  • What are the unique features of managing workers and workplace by organizations in Asia-pacific region and their implications from organizations in and outside the region?
  • How has the pandemic and socio-political and economic developments have changed the approach to management in Asia-pacific region?
  • Under the current pandemic, is there any Asian approach that helps organizations to continue to survive and maintain competitiveness? Are there research findings useful to Asian firms and can also be applied to other countries?
  • What are the differences in management styles and approaches within the countries in Asia pacific region? What are the sources of these differences?
  • How can we promote research that is not only academically rigorous as well as practically relevant? How can the “balance” be achieved and are the corresponding implications differ across countries in Asia?
  • Is there any unique issue emerging in Asian countries, related to the “balance of scientific rigor with the demands for quick publications”?
  • How to develop further the business education, through say case teaching, in Business schools in Asia, so that we can cultivate more qualified future managers for businesses?

The issues listed above are representative examples. We invite and encourage you to be creative & forward-looking, proposing new ideas relevant to Asian management. Such academic activities could comprise:

  1. Panel sessions
  2. Developmental workshops for junior faculty and doctoral students
  3. Round table discussions on specific research areas/topics
  4. Feedback on preliminary research ideas by experienced journal reviewers
  5. Any other creative forms of scholarly activities

Any proposals for sessions organized in collaboration with other divisions, associated or affiliated societies of the Academy of Management will also be highly appreciated.
