President's Message
Jacqueline A-M. Coyle-Shapiro served as the 75th President of the Academy of Management during the 2019-2020 term. During the Academy’s first ever virtual Annual Meeting, Jackie delivered her 2020 Presidential Address, which is available to view online.
In 2020, the Academy of Management and its members were challenged in unprecedented ways. Our experience was not unique; people across the globe continued to experience personal and professional implications due to COVID-19.
However, as my trusted colleague Jacqueline A-M. Coyle-Shapiro stated in her 2020 Presidential Address, “the Academy of Management will thrive because of the present challenges and adversity, not “despite” them.” This past year has demonstrated the collaborative strength of our amazing community of scholars and our collective knowledge and capability for facing the continuing challenges of our post-pandemic world and bringing about changes that enhance our professional association.
For example, our inspired community responded with unwavering volunteer spirit to successfully convene the 80th Annual Meeting in a fully virtual setting. The Academy came together in new ways and advanced AOM's driving goals of connecting members with one another while providing indispensable value and service.
This Annual Report represents the Academy’s activities for the 2020 calendar year. AOM 2020 took place 7-11 August 2020 and more than 7,000 members from around the world participated virtually to engage around shared research, catch up with friends and colleagues, and connect online. In April, we made the hard decision not to hold the much-anticipated Specialized Conference in Mexico City, Advancing Management Research in Latin America, and instead, conducted some components of the event online.
Our members and volunteer leaders showed resilience in the face of disruption and strengthened their commitment to scholarship by sharing COVID related resources as well as other important topics on [email protected] The AOM journals’ Meet the Editors session was among the highest attended sessions of the conference, and the Division and Interest Groups embraced the change of venue—to engage scholars and offer news ways to connect with one another. The Doctoral Student Development Program (DSDP), a benefit for student members of AOM, was joined by nearly one-third of those eligible, all of whom now have online access to the comprehensive video library of the Consortium for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis, or CARMA.
This dynamic annual report also offers appreciation for our dedicated volunteers and highlights the Academy’s awards and recognition program, featuring professional accomplishments, distinguished service, and exceptional contributions to the field of management.
